Jones Honored By EWL

January 6, 2004
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. * West Virginia University wrestler Greg Jones has been named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) wrestler of the week for his efforts at the Midlands and Sun Devil Duals.

A native of Slickville, Pa., Jones swept through the 184-pound weight class, earning a tournament title at the prestigious 41st Midlands Wrestling Championships.

Jones made his first appearance of the season at the Midlands, where he took the title in a sudden victory tiebreaker match, 2-1, over Ben Heizer of Northern Illinois. Both wrestlers traded escapes for a 1-1 tie, sending the contest into overtime. The junior Mountaineer jumped out immediately from his down position in the first :30 second tiebreaker period to score the winning point.

In Tempe, Ariz., Jones posted two victories at the Sun Devil Duals host by Arizona State. Against Stanford, Jones tallied a 14-4 major decision over John Garfinkel for win number one. In the afternoon session, Jones scored a fall (3:44) against J.C. Russell of Missouri.

Jones is the second Mountaineer to receive this weekly honor as sophomore Matt Lebe (157) earned the EWL award earlier this year (Nov. 24).

WVU next wrestles at home against Big Ten power and No. 13 ranked Penn State on Jan. 10, at 6 p.m., in the WVU Coliseum.
