Former Mountaineer Olympic Hopeful

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Dean Morrison, a former West Virginia University National Champion, finds himself among the nation’s best wrestlers as part of the United States Olympic roster.

The Olympic wrestling rosters have been finalized for the 2004 U.S. Men's Freestyle Winter Tour, which includes Morrison. The former Mountaineer will participate in two Winter Tour events for the U.S. squad.

Morrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) will compete at 96 kg/211.5 lbs for the United States at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial International in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Morrison will then represent the U.S. squad at the Kiev Grand Prix in Kiev, Ukraine, Feb. 20-21.

The New York native placed second at the 2003 U.S. Nationals and won the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials. He also won a gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

While at WVU, Morrison was a 1994 NCAA champion and the school's first three-time Eastern Wrestling League champion. Morrison ranks fourth on the Mountaineer's all-time wins list with a 103-32-2 record.
