Jones Honored

February 10, 2004

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University wrestler Greg Jones has been named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) wrestler of the week for his efforts in remaining unbeaten and helping WVU post two league wins.

A native of Slickville, Pa., Jones continued his dominance on the mat at 184-pounds with a 10-6 victory over Ben Heizer of Northern Illinois in the 38th Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic. Jones, the nation’s No. 1 ranked wrestler, scored five takedowns in defeating No. 2 ranked Heizer in a match that pits the nation’s top collegiate wrestlers against each other.

Against rival Pitt on Friday, the junior Mountaineer steered WVU back on track with his fifth fall of the year. Jones raced out to a 9-2 lead through two periods over Mike Croyle. Jones earned six team points for West Virginia with his fall at 5:32 in the final period.

On Sunday, Jones picked up his fifth major decision victory of the season against Shaun Guttridge of Virginia Tech. Jones tallied six takedowns in the match and scored five points on four Hokie stalls. The junior’s 18-5 win extended WVU’s team lead to 32-9.

Jones remains unbeaten at 15-0 on the year. The Mountaineers own a 6-4 overall record and remain unbeaten at 4-0 in EWL play. West Virginia has now won 18 consecutive EWL regular season contests.

The weekly award is Jones’ second EWL honor of the season. Sophomore Matt Lebe (157) earned conference honors earlier this year (Nov. 24).
