April 5, 2004

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two West Virginia University wrestlers and four alumni will compete at the U.S. Nationals on April 9-10, in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This competition serves as the major qualifying event for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, set for Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23.

Current Mountaineers Greg Jones and Matt Lebe will compete for the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club at 84 KG/185-pounds and 74 KG/163-pounds. Jones, a two-time NCAA champion, is currently ranked No. 8 in the U.S. Senior Freestyle rankings by TheMat.com.

Recent alumni Casey Brewster and Joe Carr will also wrestle for the Sunkist Kids. They join Eastern Wrestling League Hall of Famers Dean Morrison and Dominic Black in competition this weekend.

“This is a great opportunity to compete against the best wrestlers in the United States,” says WVU assistant and Olympic Freestyle coach Zeke Jones. “This competition provides a dream for many to represent Team USA at the Olympic games.”

Brewster, who recently completed his WVU career with an NCAA tournament appearance, will wrestle at 60 KG/132-pounds. Carr, one of seven Mountaineers with 100-plus career wins, will compete at 66 KG/145.5-pounds.

Morrison, the 1994 NCAA champion at 177-pounds for WVU, is currently ranked No. 2 in the U.S. Senior Freestyle rankings at 96 KG/211.5-pounds. Morrison will represent the New York Athletic Club in competition.

Black, a 1991 All-American at West Virginia, is currently ranked No. 4 at 96 KG/211.5-pounds. Black will compete for the U.S. Army in an attempt to earn a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team.

The top eight placewinners in each style in men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle qualify for the Final Olympic Trials event.
