ATHENS, Ohio – The West Virginia University wrestling team dropped a close dual meet to Ohio, 18-16, at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio, on Friday, Feb. 10.

The Mountaineers (4-5, 3-0 EWL) won five bouts on the evening, but the difference for Ohio (11-9, 1-0 MAC) ended up being bonus points off of a pin in the 125-pound bout.

Freshman Brandon Rader got the first win of the evening for WVU when he scored a 15-4 major against Ohio’s Albert Madsen. The Parkersburg, W.Va., native recorded a total of five takedowns and didn’t allow his Bobcat opponent to score an offensive point in the match.

Matt Lebe extended his winning streak to 10 with a close 5-4 decision over OU’s Jake Frerichs at 157-pounds. Like Rader, Lebe did not allow an offensive point, but Frerichs was able to keep the bout close on three takedowns and a stalling point awarded by the referee.

Freshman Larry Hall followed Lebe by earning a convincing 6-1 decision against Kent Smith. The Jeannette, Pa., native led 3-0 through two periods and answered a late escape by Smith with a takedown and a point for riding time.

Kurt Brenner scored the third win of the night for West Virginia when he earned a 14-7 decision over Ryan Knapp in the 174-pound match. The Freedom, Pa., native recorded a big third period as he scored 10 points and appeared to be on track to record a major decision, however, the referee awarded a reversal to Knapp just as time expired.

In the 197-pound bout sophomore Jared Villers earned a point in the first period for unsportsmanlike conduct against Nick Terbay and added a riding point to win a 2-0 decision. The Akron, Ohio, native has not been beaten since Jan. 13 and has won five in a row.

With WVU leading 16-15 the match came down to the heavyweight bout between Matt Holsopple and Marcus Adelman. Despite being outweighed by over 30 pounds, Holsopple was able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead, but fell behind 3-2 by the end of the first. Trailing 4-2 with seconds remaining and being behind by over a minute in riding time, Holsopple performed an escape and a last second shot, but the two points would not be given to him for a takedown and Adelman got the 5-3 decision.

West Virginia returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 12, when it hosts EWL opponent Lock Haven in the final home match of the 2006 season. Wrestling begins at 1 p.m.
