MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University wrestling team claimed four individual titles and four runner-up finishes at the 26th annual WVU Open on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown.

Mountaineer grapplers Brandon Rader, David Jauregui, Jared Villers and Matt Holsopple all took first in their respective weight classes, while Mark Anderson, Zac Fryling, Larry Hall and Kurt Brenner each finished second.

Rader, a returning 2006 All-American, defeated Old Dominion’s Cam Watkins, 8-5, in the 141-pound championship bout to claim his first WVU Open title. The sophomore from Parkersburg, W.Va., recorded two pins and a win by forfeit on his way to the title.

149-pounder David Jauregui won by injury default in his title bout to tally his first Open title as well. The Santa Ana, Calif., native defeated Shippensburg’s Don Nauman in the semifinals in a 9-4 decision.

Villers continued to record big wins as he did last season, defeating opponents by a combined score of 34-6 in his three bouts. The Akron, Ohio, native defeated Virginia’s Brent Jones in the championship match, 11-3.

Senior Matt Holsopple won his first career tournament title as he upended teammate Daniel Goulart, 3-2, in the heavyweight championship. The Sharpsville, Pa., native also tallied a 6-3 decision over Carlton Campbell from Appalachian State and a 12-6 win over Penn State’s Nathan Andrews.

The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 18, when they travel to Annapolis, Md., to compete in the Navy Classic.
