ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The West Virginia University wrestling team claimed three individual titles en route to a third-place finish at the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Halsey Field House in Annapolis, Md.

The Mountaineers accumulated 102 points on the day, finishing behind second-place Bloomsburg (141.5 points) and first-place Navy (148.5 points). The win was Navy’s third consecutive tournament title at the event.

Brandon Rader (141), Zac Fryling (157) and Jared Villers (197) each won their weight classes at the 12-team, 188-wrestler, tournament. Also placing on the afternoon were heavyweight Dustin Rogers and 184-pounder Chance Litton, who finished third and fourth, respectively.

Rader breezed to his second consecutive Navy Classic as he tallied a pair of pins and three major decisions. After defeating Liberty’s Tim Harner 19-7 in the semifinals the Parkersburg, W.Va., native pinned Tony Curto of Bloomsburg in the finals. Rader led 13-7 before recording his second fall of the tournament at the 6:30 mark in the bout.

Villers was equally impressive on Saturday as he recorded a pin and two technical falls on his way to the title bout. The Akron, Ohio, native faced Bucknell’s Eric Lapotsky in the finals and jumped out to a 7-1 lead through the first two periods before finishing with a 10-3 victory.

Fryling recorded a technical fall in the quarterfinals and then defeated George Mason’s Robert Henry in the semifinals, 6-3. The Lansdale, Pa., native faced home crowd favorite John Jarred of Navy in the finals and was able to squeak out a 4-3 win. Fryling scored two takedowns in the first period, which proved to be enough as Jarred could only muster three escapes.

Rogers showed his potential after sitting out most of the 2005-06 season with a back injury. The Corning, Calif., native recorded two wins before losing by pin in the semifinals to eventual champion Ed Pendergast of Navy. Rogers defeated McDaniel’s Ryan Deiter in the consolation semifinals and then won against Navy’s Scott Steele for the second time in the tournament.

Litton continued to improve as he posted a 4-2 record on the day on his way to a fourth-place finish. Navy’s Matthew Parsons won by a 5-1 decision over the Parkersburg, W.Va., native in the consolation finals.

West Virginia returns to action December 1-2, when it travels to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
