KOLAT MAKES OLYMPIC TEAM
Black comes up short
DALLAS, TEXAS (June 24, 2000)
WVU assistant wrestling coach and U.S. Nationals champion Cary Kolat has earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Kolat eliminated
Bill Zadick, of Iowa City, Iowa, in a best two-out-of-three series in
the championship finals of the 138.75 pound weight class at the U.S. Olympic team trials in Dallas, Texas. Zadick defeated
T.J. Jaworsky 5-0 the previous day, earning the right to take on Kolat.
Former Mountaineer grappler Dominic Black
advanced to the championship finals in the 213.75 pound weight class
with a 5-2 overtime victory over Chad Lamer.
Black, a former WVU All-American, faced 2000 U.S. Nationals
champion Melvin Douglas, of Mesa, Ariz., in a best two-out-of-three series
but came up short. Douglas defeated Black via tech-fall in their first match, and Black was
forced to bow out via injury default in their second match.
