WVU Dominates Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – The West Virginia University wrestling team rebounded in dominating fashion Sunday by taking care of Clarion, 38-6, at W.S. Tippin Gym in Clarion, Pa.

The win marked the largest margin of victory (32) for West Virginia all season and the first time since 2004 that the team score at least 38 points.

After falling behind early, 6-0, in the dual the Mountaineers (2-2, 1-1) cruised to eight consecutive victories to win its sixth consecutive against the Golden Eagles (7-7, 0-2)

WVU garnered valuable bonus points in the win as it received falls from Jared Villers and Dustin Rogers, technical falls from David Jauregui (149) and Zac Fryling (157) and a major decision from Kurt Brenner (174). Brandon Rader (141) and Eric Connolly (165) came away with decisions, while Chance Litton tallied a win by forfeit.

The win for the Mountaineers on Sunday marked the 530th win in program history and the 234th win coach Craig Turnbull’s career in Morgantown. Turnbull, a Clarion graduate, is now 19-3 all-time versus his alma mater.

West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Feb. 2, when it faces EWL rival Pitt at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh. Start time is 7 p.m.
