WVU Enters National Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 13, 2015) – The West Virginia University wrestling team has broken into the national rankings, earning the 25th spot on InterMat’s College Wrestling Dual Meet Rankings list released on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers, who are 6-5 overall, claimed the 25th spot after downing then-No. 25 Bucknell, 19-15, at last week’s Virginia Duals in Hampton, Virginia. The squad took six bouts from the Bison, including a 16-7 major decision by Parker VonEgidy over Rory Bonner at 174 pounds.

“It is a step in the right direction and is a credit to the wrestlers and my coaching staff,” said first-year head coach Sammie Henson. “We will stay on course and continue to build on this.”

Individually, Michael Morales ranks 11th in the nation at 141 pounds, boasting a 24-7 overall record with a trio of wins over ranked opponents. Morales also sits 11th in Flo Wrestling’s national rankings and is 13th according to WIN Magazine.

West Virginia travels to Oklahoma to open Big 12 action this weekend. The Mountaineers will face No. 8 Oklahoma State on Friday in Stillwater in an 8 p.m. ET dual before heading to Norman for a Sunday afternoon tilt with Oklahoma at 3 p.m. ET.
