Chun, Marable Compete at Olympic Trials

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 10, 2016) – West Virginia University wrestling operations assistant Clarissa Chun took third place while assistant coach Nick Marable dropped a close match for third at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

The two were coached by WVU coach Sammie Henson for Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club. Marable and Chun train in Morgantown at the Mountaineer Regional Training Center.

Chun started the day with back-to-back tech. falls. She defeated Alesha Zapitella, 12-0, before topping Nicole Woody, 14-4, to advance to the semifinals. Chun dropped her semifinal bout, 9-2, to Victory Anthony to drop to the consolation side of the bracket. She registered another tech. fall against Zapitella, this time by a score of 10-0, to move onto the third-place bout. Chun then won a 10-0 tech. fall over Woody to take third, two spots back from making the team.

After opening with a pair of byes, Marable went 2-2 on the day. He defeated Dan Vallimont, 3-1, in the quarterfinals before topping Chris Perry, 10-6, in the semifinals to qualify for the challenge tournament finals. Marable dropped a 2-1 bout to Andrew Howe in the finals, moving to the third-place match. He suffered a 2-1 loss to Alex Dieringer, who recently wrapped up his career at Big 12 foe Oklahoma State.
