Trio Undefeated at Journeymen Classic

TROY, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2016) – No. 13 Dylan Cottrell earned wins over a pair of ranked opponents as three members of the West Virginia University wrestling team won their pools at the 2016 Journeymen ASICS Collegiate Classic at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York, on Sunday.

Cottrell used a pair of upsets to claim his pool at 157 pounds, while Christian Monserrat and James Dekrone also went undefeated as each won his pool at 149 pounds. West Virginia tallied a total of seven bonus-point victories, including four pins, a tech. fall and two major decisions.

“We had some good success with our men,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “We have improved immensely on top, which has opened up matches for us and helped us win some important matches against ranked opponents. The goal will be to build off this and continue to establish more attacks to finish on our feet. I’m proud of these young men coming together as a team.”

Cottrell opened with a 3-1 decision over Lehigh’s Cole Walter, using a takedown late in the third for the win. He then posted one of the top wins of the tournament, upsetting No. 9 Anthony Valencia of Arizona State. Cottrell used an early takedown to accrue nearly three minutes of riding time in the first period, stretching his lead to 3-0 with a quick escape in the second. Valencia scored a pair of takedowns, but Cottrell countered with a pair of escapes before adding riding time to win a 6-5 decision. He then took on No. 12 Clark Glass of Oklahoma for first place in the pool. The two remained scoreless until Cottrell escaped with four seconds remaining in the third for the 1-0 decision to improve his record to 5-0 on the year.

Monserrat moved 5-0 on the season as well, rolling to a trio of victories to claim his pool at 149. He started things off with a 2-0 decision over Arizona State’s Oliver Pierce, using a second-period escape for a 1-0 lead before padding his lead with the riding time point. Monserrat then won a 5-4 decision over Rider’s Jesse Rodgers before pinning Lehigh’s Jon Mele in the second period to finish things out.

Dekrone went 4-0 to take his pool at 149 pounds as well. He pinned Derak Hayman of Cortland in 1:56 to start the Mountaineers off, then added a 16-1 tech. fall in the first period of his match against Matt Langan of LIU. Dekrone added his third bonus-point victory of the day with a 12-0 major decision over Ithaca’s Sam Schneider before pinning Cortland’s Matt Caputo in just 16 seconds to claim first.

Parker VonEgidy posted a pair of wins at 184 pounds, winning an 8-4 decision over OU’s Andrew Dixon before recording an 11-9 decision against North Carolina’s Elijah Kerr-Brown on his way to a second-place finish in his pool. Cory Stainbrook won 4-2 decisions over both NC State’s Sean Fausz and OU’s Trae Blackwell at 133. Ryan Elliott pinned LIU’s Tyler Walsh in the first period and later added a 4-2 decision over Cortland’s Alex DeAngelo to finish third in his pool at 133.

The Mountaineers travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, next weekend to take on the No. 7 Nebraska Huskers on Friday evening.
