Mountaineer Duo Remains in Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 10, 2017) – A pair of West Virginia University wrestlers remain nationally ranked at their respective weights, as Dylan Cottrell (165) and Jacob A. Smith (197) are both in the top-20 in the latest rankings released on Tuesday

Smith went 2-0 during the Mountaineers' West Coast swing, including a win over No. 18 Matt Williams of CSU Bakersfield. He moved to 8-4 on the season and sits at No. 6 via InterMat and FloWrestling. Smith also ranks at No. 10 according to The Open Mat.

Cottrell returned to the mat following a minor injury suffered in mid-November. He won by tech. fall, 19-4, against in his return against Cal Poly’s Luke Wilson, but dropped a 9-6 decision to No. 13 Lorenzo De La Riva of CSUB. At 7-1 on the season, Cottrell is currently ranked at No. 8 by InterMat and is No. 12 via FloWrestling.

The Mountaineers (0-7) travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday for the Pitt Duals, where they will face Rider, Binghamton and Harvard starting at 9 a.m.
