WVU Falls to No. 23 Edinboro

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 17, 2017) – Three Mountaineers came away with wins as the West Virginia University wrestling team fell to No. 23 Edinboro, 27-10, in the final home dual of the season on Friday evening at the WVU Coliseum.

During their match against the Fighting Scots (9-5, 6-0 EWL), the Mountaineers (3-13, 1-3) celebrated the careers of nine seniors. Jake S. Smith, Bryson Begley, Louis Colonna, James Dekrone, William Jenkins, Cory Stainbrook, Tony DeAngelo, Ty Millward and Dylan Cottrell were honored at intermissions.

Cottrell, ranked No. 11/19 at 165, earned a win on his Senior Night as he downed No. 13/9 Austin Matthews for the second straight year. No. 5 Jacob A. Smith led the way with a major decision of Dylan Reynolds at 197 pounds while Joe Wheeling topped Nate Hagan in a 4-1 decision at 133 pounds.

The Fighting Scots opened the match with a pin at 125 pounds for a 6-0 lead. Stainbrook dropped a tight, 5-4 decision to No. 19/18 Korbin Myers at 133 as Edinboro took a 9-0 lead.

After a scoreless first period at 141, Wheeling started on bottom in the second and used an escape and a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. He rode Hagan through the third, giving up a penalty point but taking the riding time point in the 4-1 victory to put WVU on the board, down 9-3.

The Mountaineers dropped back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 as they trailed 15-3 entering Cottrell’s match at 165. He quickly went to work, scoring a takedown and a pair of nearfall points. He gave up the escape to Matthews, but took a 4-1 lead into the second period. Matthews started in the defensive position and earned an escape to make it 4-2 before Cottrell added to his lead with another takedown. Matthews escaped once more, but Cottrell took a 6-3 advantage into the third period. Opting for a neutral start, Cottrell added his third takedown of the bout and claimed the riding time point for the 9-3 decision.

West Virginia trailed 15-6 after Cottrell’s win, but again dropped back-to-back bouts. An Edinboro tech. fall at 174 and decision at 184 put the Fighting Scots ahead 23-6. Smith then added four points to the board with his major decision over Reynolds. A first-period takedown gave Smith a 2-0 lead, which he made 3-0 after escaping from bottom to start the second. Reynolds was called for stalling on four occasions, adding a trio of points to Smith’s lead. Smith scored five takedowns in the third period before tacking on the riding time point for a 17-5 win.

Entering the final bout down 23-10, the Mountaineers dropped a major decision at heavyweight to give Edinboro the 27-10 win.

West Virginia travels to Clarion on Sunday to close out the regular season. The Mountaineers and the Golden Eagles are set to square off at 2 p.m. inside Tippin Gym in Clarion, Pennsylvania.
