Wrestling Finishes 12th at East Regionals

LAURINBURG, N.C. – The Golden Bear wrestling team gained quality experience this weekend in its East Regional Tournament run at St. Andrews University. The squad finished 12th scoring 8.5 points in the tournament.

In 149 lb. action, junior John Walters was pinned in his first bout by Campbellsville University's Steven Sandefer. He bounced back to defeat Missouri Baptist's Alejandro Wajner in a 17-0 tech fall after receiving two byes. Walters then defeated Calumet's Derek Allen in a 9-2 decision.

Sophomores Conrad Lacey and Chance Smith faced each other in the third round of the 157 lb. division. After a close battle, Lacey came out on top with a 5-4 decision victory. Lacey's tournament run ended after being defeated by Life University's Oliver Brukardt in an 11-2 major decision.

In the 165 lb. division, freshman Dirk Ponchak defeated Brewton-Parker College's Justin Sperin in an 11-6 decision before falling to Lindsey Wilson's James Haywood in a 5-2 decision. After receiving a bye, Ponchak's tournament run ended when SAU's Steffan Baker defeated him in a 8-5 decision.

Lindsey Wilson College took home the team title while Campbellsville University finished as the runner-up.
