Tech Competes at John Crytzer Invitational

LEXINGTON, Virginia — Junior Denis Robles-Gomez finished fourth at 125 to lead WVU Tech wrestling to an eighth place finish at the John Crytzer Invitational hosted by Washington and Lee University Saturday. The Golden Bears finished with 27.5 team points while John Carroll University won with 129.5 points followed by the host school, Washington and Lee, who scored 123.5 points.

Robles-Gomez opened the tournament with a bye before falling to Lenny Ogozalek of Gettysburg by technical fall. The junior went on to win his next two bouts by fall (6:03 and 0:53) prior to scoring a major decision (15-7) over Scranton's Brandon Davis. In the third place match, Robles-Gomez fell to Ogozalek again by fall (4:53). Junior Paul Gonzales produced 6.5 team points and a sixth place finish in the 133 weight class with three wins during the tournament — one by technical fall over Washington and Lee's Michael Smith, one by decision (14-8) and a bye in the first round.

Sophomore Corey Palmer (165) won by decision (9-7) and fall (0:42) while junior Colton Rowe (174) and freshman Noah Julian (285) each won by decision in their respective weight classes. Sophomore Jephte Jeanpaul scored a win by major decision (13-3) at 149.

The Golden Bears return to action January 16 when they travel to Newport News, Virginia for the Builder Invitational.
