Nance three-time national champ at 197, Tech back-to-back runners-up

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania — WVU Tech wrestling was carried to a second place finish, for the second consecutive season, in the 2017 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Wrestling Invitational Championship with an individual champion in Terry Nance II (197) and nine other top-five finishes Saturday in State College, Pennsylvania.

Tech finished with 130.5 points to come out just behind NCAA DII Alderson Broaddus University (178 points) in a championship that saw individuals from 14 different schools. Alfred State (110.5 points) finished third in the competition.

Nance is now a three-time USCAA National Champion at 197 after his efforts Saturday. The Lanham, Maryland topped his opponent with a 4-1 decision at 197 pounds to be crowned a national champion for the third consecutive year.

The team also benefited from second place finishers senior Paul Gonzales (125), freshman Leland Swafford (149) and junior Jephte Jeanpaul (157).

Junior Corey Palmer wrestled at 157 while senior Colton Rowe participated at 174 both earning third in the nation.

The final top finishes for Tech included seniors Bryan Overton (4th, 174) and Denis Robles (5th, 133), junior Jason Wainright (4th, 285) and freshman Will Van Hoose (5th, 184)

Next, the Golden Bears will concentrate on the NAIA East Regionals set to be held February 18.
