Alderson Broaddus Official Wrestling Website | Schedules AB's Five Champions Lead the Inaugural Battler RoyaleNovember 16, 2019PHILIPPI, W.Va. --Alderson Broaddus led the field at today's inaugural Battler Royale at the Rex Pyles Arena with five champions. Going undefeated in their weight classes today were 125 Noah Hodges, 141 Curtis Cox, 184 Gino Sita, 197 Alex Eaton, and Heavyweight Jared Burgoyne. Hodges defeated his long-time rival Shawn Moore of Davis & Elkins in the final by major decision, using several takedowns and a nasty ride to get the job done. Cox didn't have a close match all day going 4-0 with three technical falls and a first-period pin. Sita's semi-final match against D&E's Kyle Wojtaszek was their third meeting this year, and unlike the two previous bouts that were close, the Battler Junior opened the gap in the 3rd period and cruised to an 18-8 major decision victory. In the final he needed only 27 seconds to pin his opponent from Garrett College. Alex Eaton's first action of the year at his natural weight class earned him the championship at 197 lbs, where he had a pin and a decision on the day. Heavyweight Jared Burgoyne had a fall, a decision, and a major decision on his way to his first tournament title of his sophomore season. Two Battlers finished second in their weights, with Sophomore Josh Dailey taking the silver at 174 lbs, and Freshman Dalton Pearl earning the runner-up spot at 157 lbs. Other Battlers securing victories on the day were Derek Schmidt, Nick Sulhoff, Breandan Coughlin, and Austin Gibson. Coach Gardner: "I thought today went well. My guys did the hard work of running a tournament very smoothly, which you might imagine is a challenge. On top of that they wrestled well. Curtis has rounded back into the form we expect of him. Gino was dominant. Noah Hodges wrestled with real grit. Jared beat a guy in the semi-final who majored him last year. We attacked better as a whole and I think we defended better as well. It was fun to have an event like this at AB. I hope our fans and families enjoyed the day as much as we did." Men's Wrestling will travel to Ohio to wrestle in the Lake Erie Invitational, hosted by Lake Erie College, on Sunday, November 24th starting at 9 a.m. Return to the WV-Mat front page |
