JAMES H. MORRIS Sherrard Dual Meet Championships

February 12-13, 1999
Sherrard Junior High School, Wheeling WV

Third time's a charm: like a vampire rising from the grave, it couldn't be stopped. Rescheduled a THIRD time due to weather, the 6th Sherrard Dual Meet Championships got underway on the last possible weekend of the season. Although late in the Jr. High season, nine teams showed up to battle. Of the top 6 AA/A High School teams in the state, 4 were represented by their Middle Schools/Jr. Highs. Back after a 5-year absence, Oak Glen(#1) returned in style with a lot of placewinners and 2 individual champs. They took home the Top Middle School award. Cameron(#2), Wirt County(#3) and Calhoun County(#6) were also on hand to join Moundsville, Harpers Ferry, host Sherrard and Moundsville's and Sherrard's "B" teams.

In the match that ultimately decided the team title, Sherrard squeaked by Moundsville 36-35. Moundsville (27-1) won 8 of the 15 match-ups, but the Rams (39-3) got more pins. The match itself had a HS-intensity to it throughout. Moundsville had beaten Sherrard twice in the season in dual competition (by 6 and 8 points) and won their own invititational by 1.5 two weeks earlier. Some of the key match-ups: Wayt came from behind in the last 20 seconds to score 4 points and win the 83-lb match; Jones clung to a 2-pt lead in the last 45 seconds to win 8-6 (Jones finished 50-0 on the season); Adkins decisioned WSAZ champ Bryan 4-1 (but Adkins had beaten him 14-3 earlier in the season); Brian White overcame a 7-4 deficit in the last period to pin Berisford at 145; and, Clayton Anderson got beat 13-4, but didn't get pinned by Chris Taylor to provide the ultimate margin of victory (Taylor had pinned him twice and teched him this season).

There were a LOT of close matches and the quality of wrestling was pretty much great as everyone was motivated by that LAST CHANCE of the season for glory.

The tournament was re-named this year in honor of James "Deadeye" Morris. Jim was a wrestling enthusiast who had 3 sons who attended Sherrard and John Marshall H,. two of whom were state champs: Jeff in 1977 and Greg in 1977 & 79. Awards were provided by the Morris family and Jeff Morris was on hand to present the individual and team awards.
